Rebar J-hooks are needed when the top surface will be loose gravel or grass. This ensures the grid is pinned down and secured to the earth. If J-hooks are not used, stones could undermine the grid lifting it up over time.
The J-hooks are not needed if using pavers or Gravel-Lok®.
